Carrick were drawn away to St. John’s in the first round of the Connaught Cup in what was always going to be a difficult fixture.
Playing with the breeze at their backs in the first half, Carrick threatened the St John’s goal several times, but were also lucky not to concede before half time.
St. John’s took full advantage of the breeze in the second half and the Carrick goal was under threat from the off. St. John’s broke the deadlock within 5 minutes and after 20 minutes were 3 goals to the good.
Carrick mounted a rearguard action for the remainder of the fixture, but could do little to stop a now rampant St. John’s side. St. John’s recorded another 3 goals before the whistle to advance to the next round as strong contenders for the title, while Carrick now enter the Shield competition.
